For most of us, coffee is the only thing we can use to properly wake up in the morning – many claim that they just can’t function properly if they don’t have that fresh cup of coffee in their French press, ready to be served, as soon as they wake up.

However, while most people know only the basic things that concern coffee and its morning healing powers, there is so much more one should know about his or her favorite beverage. Therefore, today we’ll be showing you ten of the things that you should really know about coffee.

Alternative medicine

Several studies have shown that coffee is actually good for your liver, might reduce the risk of colon cancer, and reduce the risk of heart attacks. Moreover, yet another study has reported that, if you drink one to five cups a day, the risk of early death might be generally reduced.

Of course, we are not done yet – it has also been found that coffee is associated with a reduced risk of multiple sclerosis. So, it is safe to say that coffee, when consumed moderately, may help you and your body and make you a healthier person.

 

No more pain

Way back, in 2012 to be more specific, one study found that the people who drink coffee before they sit down to work, in an office or home at the computer, experienced less shoulder and neck pain.

Another study showed that around two cups of coffee a day may eventually help you reduce and avoid the post-gym muscle pain. However, the study was conducted on a group of people that were not regular coffee drinkers, so we can’t say if the same thing would apply to those that enjoy more than one cup a day.

 

Better and more effective than energy drinks

Most people think that an energy drink will provide them with much more energy than the usual cup of coffee. However, that’s a wrong assumption – for example, an 8.4-ounce can of energy drink contains around 80mg of caffeine while your delicious cup of coffee contains around 95 – 200mg.

Moreover, most energy drinks contain other substances that damage your health while a fresh, natural cup of coffee has just caffeine and a heavenly taste – therefore, you might want to choose a ground espresso coffee instead of an energy drink the next time you feel like you need some extra energy to get through the day.

 

Decaf, but it still has caffeine

Yes, you read that right – decaf coffee indeed has caffeine in it. A study has shown that around five to ten cups of decaf coffee contain as much caffeine as one or two usual coffee cups. Of course, if you feel the need to chug down up to 10 cups of decaf coffee in a single day, then you might as well just switch to caffeinated coffee.

 

Neither the coffee nor the caffein are bitter

Many people don’t drink coffee just because it’s bitter – however, this is what most of the coffee drinkers love about it. On the other hand, there are some that believe that caffeine is the cause of this bitterness.

Of course, they are wrong – it’s the antioxidants that cause the coffee’s bitterness.

 

 

It’s not the same for everybody

Naturally, we are not talking only about its taste – we are talking about how different types of people metabolize coffee.

For example, men process it much slower than women – this is probably why your significant other wakes up faster or slower after they’ve had a cup of coffee -, non-smokers process it twice as slow as smokers, and women that are on birth control process it at about a third of the rate than women that are not on birth control.

 

Coffee does not dehydrate you

A common misconception is the fact that coffee dehydrates you and that you should drink extra water in order to get your water levels back up. However, a study found that coffee works just as good as water in terms of hydration.

It was shown that, if you are a regular caffeine consumer, your body will be more able to regulate the intake of fluid and make your body more tolerant to any potential diuretic effects.

 

Arabica and Robusta

There are two species of coffee in the world, namely Arabica and Robusta. The latter is more productive, higher in caffeine than Arabica – 50% more caffeine -, and more disease resistant. On the other hand, Arabica has more lipids – around 50% more – and twice as many sugars than Robusta – making it more acidic and with complex flavor aromatics.

A study has shown that 70% of the world consumes the Arabica variety, mainly because of its aromatic and mild taste – while 30% prefer Robusta, probably because it has more caffeine and there are days when those people really need a kick. So, two coffee pods may look just the same, but one of them has 50% more energy waiting for you than the other one.

 

Coffee is tasted with violent slurps

Of course, there are judges that taste coffee and determine whether the beverage is good or not. When they do so, they slurp it violently so that it reaches every part of the mouth that matters when it comes to tasting the coffee’s different flavors.

By slurping, the tongue will decide over the coffee’s sweetness while the back of the throat will determine its bitterness – for the two characteristics to be tasted and tested at the same time, violent slurps are required.

 

Say thank you to the goats

It is believed that coffee was discovered by goats! It is said that, around one thousand years ago, a herd of goats feasted on red coffee beans while they were grazing on a mountainside in Africa.

The result – the shepherd couldn’t sleep because the sheep were active all night long. However, the story does not end here. After the shepherd’s sleepless night, he took the information he had just discovered to a group of monks – this marks the beginnings of coffee as a beverage.
